About AmphiStar
AmphiStar is a young and dynamic spin-off company (2021) from Ghent University and the Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant. We offer a portfolio of locally produced biosurfactants from waste to brand owners and their suppliers who want to develop truly sustainable, performing and affordable substitutes for surfactants. Surfactants or surface-active substances are used as active and functional ingredients in a wide range of products that we all use in our daily lives, including consumer and industrial products, in sectors as diverse as household and personal care, cosmetics, textiles, pharmaceuticals, food and feed, detergents, etc. As we say at AmphiStar, "The world can't run without surfactants!
Today, 98% of these surfactants are not sustainable, they are mainly based on fossil resources or palm oil and are mostly produced using classical (aggressive) chemical processes. AmphiStar has developed a cost-effective, ecological, flexible and scalable production technology that can convert waste and industrial by-products into a wide range of biosurfactants through fermentation. AmphiStar's biosurfactants are thus sustainable, local and circular, and furthermore, they do not compete with raw materials for food production and their production does not involve direct land use. AmphiStar's mission is to develop, scale up and produce biosurfactants at industrially relevant levels by building new local production facilities in the places where the raw materials come from. This will also reduce the EU's dependence on imports. In short, the processes developed and the products are intrinsically safe and sustainable! Thus, we help in the transition from a fossil-based to a bio-based industry.Our technology is fully in line with the vision of a circular economy, which enables a high standard of living while using chemicals and materials produced by sustainable production systems from renewable (biomass) resources.
